SNAKES… WHY’D IT HAVE TO BE SNAKES?
Ragnar’s (Travis Fimmel) final defeat may have also been his finest hour. Calling it “part of a larger and bolder strategy,” he knew his death was inevitable – and necessary to ultimately bring his enemies Ecbert and Aelle to their knees by rallying his sons to conquer the England. Ragnar’s execution in the fourth-season finale “All His Angels” saw the bloody and tortured Viking legend locked in a cage (pictured), hoisted into the air and waiting to be dropped into a pit of venomous snakes. A warrior to the end, Ragnar declares that he will soon be drinking ale with the gods as he waits for his sons to join him and bask in their tales of triumph. The end is brutal and beautiful – and one of the most dramatic television deaths ever filmed. Fans of Vikings now have an opportunity to own a distinctive piece of this history as VIP Fan Auctions is offering the cage in which Ragnar was suspended over the pit and delivered his final words.
